Height conversion tables

The most common adult heights, converted both ways. The full chart, with every inch and centimetre, is on the height chart page. Every row is calculated from the same conversion the tool above uses, so the two always agree. Centimetres are rounded to 0.1 cm and inches to 0.1 in.

How the conversion works

The inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres, so there is no approximation in the conversion itself. A foot is exactly 12 inches, which makes it exactly 30.48 cm.

  • Inches to centimetres: multiply by 2.54.
  • Centimetres to inches: divide by 2.54.
  • Feet and inches to centimetres: (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54.
  • Centimetres to feet and inches: divide by 2.54, then split the inches into whole feet and the remainder.
  • Metres and centimetres: 1 m = 100 cm.

Worked example: 5′ 11″ is 5 × 12 + 11 = 71 inches, and 71 × 2.54 = 180.34 cm. Going back, 180 cm ÷ 2.54 = 70.87 inches, which is 5 feet and 10.87 inches.

Rounding

Results are rounded for display only: centimetres to 0.01, metres to 0.001, inches to 0.01, and feet and inches to a tenth of an inch. Because 180 cm is 5′ 10.9″, not a whole number of inches, the tables above show it to one decimal. Rounded to the nearest whole inch it becomes 5′ 11″, which is 180.34 cm, so a height converted there and back can change by a few millimetres.

Most people quote their height to the nearest centimetre or inch. Treat any figure past that as precision the original measurement did not have.

Put converted heights to use

Once you have a height in the unit you need, compare it with other people, objects or animals on one scale, or work out the exact difference between two heights in both unit systems.
